Recognize the author linked to The Raven and to American Gothic. The Raven is Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem, celebrated for its haunting mood, musical refrain, and exploration of grief and the supernatural. Poe is also a central figure in American Gothic, shaping the genre with stories that delve into psychological horror, eerie atmospheres, and decaying settings, such as The Tell-Tale Heart and The Fall of the House of Usher. The other writers fit different strands: Nathaniel Hawthorne is known for dark romanticism and moral allegory rather than The Raven or Poe’s specific Gothic style; Walt Whitman is known for expansive, democratic poetry; Washington Irving wrote early American tales with humor and ghostly legends but not The Raven or the core Gothic voice Poe popularized. So the author most closely associated with both The Raven and American Gothic is Edgar Allan Poe.
