Recognizing Colson Whitehead's 2016 novel that imagines slavery as a literal underground railroad is what this question tests. The book reimagines the era by making enslaved people travel through a real, subterranean rail network, using the railroad as a tangible, fantastical device to critique violence, oppression, and the persistent pull of freedom. The title itself signals this blend of history and myth, so this work is the best fit for the prompt. The other Whitehead novels listed explore different ideas and genres—one focuses on elevator culture and philosophical debates, another on a post-apocalyptic setting, and another follows a young man at a reform school in a later period—so they don’t align with the alternate-history railroad premise. This combination of the 2016 release and the literal underground railroad concept makes The Underground Railroad the right choice.
